Should education be based on universal truths or on beliefs that are relative to different cultures at different times and places.

  2. Education should be based on universal truth in that an educated person will know wrong from right and being educated will make honest and right choices. Ornstein (2003, Chap. 3), Plato describes knowledge as being intellectual, changeless and eternal.Therefore education should be universal and unchanging.Having grasped or being exposed to truths and values through education an individual is able to make decisions (right). As they are equipped with the knowledge to think logical, question, and finally make a conclusion.

  3. I agree with you as being educated on universal truth will allow one to view issues in a more objective matter. This objectivity will cause you to critically analysed situations prior to making judgements. Therefore, one way of letting this happen as postulated by Aristotle (cited in Feeney,Moravcik,Nolte and Christensen 2010) is to cultivate rationality. This can only happen when we develop the mind and body(p.67).

I strongly believe that education should be based on universal truth rather than beliefs that are relative to different cultures at different times and places because universal truth is an unalterable and permanent fact. It means that something is true no matter where you are and who says it, i.e., Play is a child life, no matter where you go you get the same answer, so that is a universal truth.

  6. At present I do not believe that education should be based on Universal Truths but should be based on beliefs that are relative to different cultures at different times and places. As I read further we'll see if my view changes.

    1. there are many cultures throughout the world, all with differing moral standards and practices; there is no way to ascertain which culture is ‘correct’ -- if at all. Culture merely displays what “is” with respect to morality, and even the famous skeptic and antagonist of religion David Hume stated that humanity cannot derive an “ought” from an “is” where morals are concerned.

  7. Education should not be based on universal truths because different cultures at different times and places see "truth" differently.In that truth can be relative based on culture and socialization.

    1. But Samantha different cultures will have different impact on education whereas universal truth as stated in Ornstein (2003)"Since what is true is always true, education should be universal and unchanging"(p.70).
      Whilst different cultures will have a greater impact on education take for instance Aristole's view was that, Women were intellectually inferior to men and they were to be trained to perform the household and child-rearing duties,Women in that society were beileved to be prevented from being educated whilst Plato believed that women should have the same responsibilities as men. That difference in culture affected the women population as it concerned being able to get an education as men.

    2. TRUTH IS TRUTH IN whatever shape or form. This truth cannot be altered, therefore it is universal regardless of the culture. That is why according to Aristotle cultivating rational thinkers will cause one to arrive at the truth.

    3. Socrates is right when he says that truth is truth, as education is unchanging. The truth is what guides you throughout life. It allows one to make the right choices in terms of reasoning. Education never change but is build upon. No matter what the culture truth remain the same (education is unchanging).

  9. Education is not static but it is unchangeable fundamentally. It is therefore important that education is based on eternal truths rather than on beliefs and culture. According to Plato genuine knowledge is changeless and eternal Ornstein (2003). For example, two and tree equal five universally. On the other, education should not be base on beliefs and culture which experiences basic changes over time. For example, in one culture women are accepted as a preacher as oppose to another she is not privilege to do so.

    1. yes i think education should be based on truth, beauty and goodness,which Socrates believe should govern human conduct. Remember his philosophy stress ethical principle that a person should strive for moral excellence, live wisely and act morally. what Socrates is saying is that morally lying is wrong. If you are in a situation in which if you speak the truth you will be killed. Socrates is saying it would be ethically right to speak the lie to save your life because it would be good and beautiful for life is precious.

Let's revisit Socrates, he is not sayining that its ok to tell a lie in order to save your skin,instead one should examine oneself and as a result your conscience would be your guide because the concept of true knowledge is within only that it is buried in the mind.Also, after self examination you are able to define yoursef and draw a conclusion. This examination will in my opinion prick your conscience and allow the truth to come to the fore.because this truth is universal it will survive wherever it finds itself. With this in mind I believe that education should be based on universal truths.

  11. Re:Samantha's comment, Universal truths cannot be defined based on culture as that which is universal would be world view and unlimited to one's cultural belief. I do believe that education should be based on universal truth because the truth cannot be changed, and as a result of this, what we learn about early childhood in this country (for example:the period of earlychildhood is from birth to age eight) should not change as we go to another country.

  12. The idea that knowledge is innate is ridiculous to me and metaphysics is not a science I subscribe to. A person is given certain advantages through genes passed down by their parents and based on the environmental factors (physical and social) that person may be able to take full advantage of the genetic gifts they are born with. Each person builds their understanding of the world based on experiences from their past and present and what they think their future may be. This is also true for governments and those who collaborate to build the education system of different countries. Based on past experiences and experiments each nation or even individual schools must decide what works best for them at a particular point in time based on the resources available to them, the cultural and economic needs of its people and must be willing to adjust to the inevitable changes that will occur over time. There are many truths asserted by the scientific community that are still rejected due to religious belief systems and how much a culture values that religious system may affect how much they teach specific scientific theories. So I must conclude that the education system must be relative to time and culture, however the knowledge that has been proven to be true as Sheldon said “two and tree equal five universally” must be universally accepted as fact. But we must also acknowledge that we must be willing to approach education with an open mind (remember new truths are discovered everyday and sometimes that an old truth must be disregarded)

  13. How about both? Universal Truths- Since what is true is always true, education should be universal and unchanging (Mifflin Company, 2003, p.70). However if education is also based on beliefs that are relative to different cultures at different times, it may help in making comparisons to what is actually true and what is false (having already known the truth).

  14. Hyacinth Scarlett October 15, 2012 12:00 noon. According to Onstein (2003) Education is unchanging. I strongly believe this. The fact is because of modern tehnology and the increase in environmental culture and activities, projects are structued differently, but the foundation of such rationality never change. I like the idea of Socrotes because unlike Plato, he said knowledge is inate which means we born with both the ability to think and reason. I also support his view due to how badly some of our children are unable to use their senses, to me this is as a result of the strategy that the topic is being imparted to them. Hence, as Socrotes said teachers just need to ask the right questions that will have children thinking logically inorder to reason a point clearly.

  15. I believe education should be based on beliefs that are relative to different cultures at different times and places. What was truth last year possibly is not truth today, further more 100 years ago. New discoveries are made regularly and are practiced based on the present belief that they are true. It is universally true that education is foundation to the growth of the individual and the nation, however the approach and context of the education will vary based on what is believed to be true.

  16. I do not totally agree with you Daniesha when you say what was true last year or 100 years ago is not possible true today. Truth is truth no matter what we make it to be or no matter how our culture changes.Consider as Harvin rightly said, Early Childhood Education is from birth to eight and that will not change no matter what

  17. Finally im in. i believe that truth is relative, to time,and people, whether it be collectively or individually. Truth is what we or you choose to believe in. If we lived in a static world where issues and norms and values did not change it would be ideal for us to teach "these universal truths" but the fact is that we do not live in this perfect world as plato would want to have it and as such i believe we should teach beliefs that are relative to the different times.

  18. the issue i find with plato philosophy is one that has been around for ages. what is true , good , right , beautiful. what are these universal truths. when these questions can be answered and agreed on universally then sure lets teach it from the mountain tops untill then lets stick to whats relative to u, in your time and your place.

  19. Universal truths, I believe, refer to the knowledge that has been brought to the forefront of our consciousness, i.e. knowledge we have discovered or made aware of. This knowledge has become the foundation upon which further latent knowledge/truths have evolved and yet there is still so much more that we do not know (latent)and have yet to "discover". These universal truths form a standard and are the same no matter what culture or country we are from. In education what is taught has to be standardized, i.e. universal truths, or there will be chaos and misunderstandings which could bring about conflict.
